Skin Cancer Screening
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. There are more than a million new cases occurring each year. It is important to see your doctor if you notice any new or changing lesions on your skin.
A new or changing skin lesion which might be a pre-cancerous or cancerous skin growth can appear in several different forms such as:
- A mole that has changed in size, shape, or color
- A pearly or waxy bump
- A sore that comes and goes but never completely heals
- A scaly or crusted tender lesion
- A firm red bump that has rapidly grown
If your dermatologist is concerned about a new or suspicious growth, a biopsy (removal of a small sample of skin) is usually performed to properly diagnose suspected cancerous lesions.
