If you’re like many people, you might feel the immediate and uncontrollable urge to squeeze your pimples. After all, getting rid of the pus can be a very satisfying feeling. Even though you might have always popped your pimples in this way, though, you should know that it’s really not a good thing to do. These are a few reasons why…
It Tears Your Skin
First of all, you should think about the fact that when you pop a pimple, you actually tear the skin. Even if you are able to pop your pimples cleanly, you will still end up with an open wound on your face. In some cases, the tears can be quite significant.
It Makes Pimples Worse

The reason why you probably want to get rid of your pimples is because you don’t like the way that they look. What you might not realize, however, is that popping your pimples can actually make them worse. This is probably the exact opposite from what you are attempting to do!
Basically, when you pop a pimple, you’re opening it up. Dirt, bacteria and more can then find its way into the pimple. This can cause the area to become more inflamed and can even cause it to become infected. Then, your pimple can grow to be even larger than it was in the first place, and it can become a lot more red and swollen. If you try to pop it again, you have to worry about repeating the same cycle. Soon enough, a once-small pimple can actually become much larger.
It Can Cause Pimples to Spread
Another bad thing about popping your pimples is the fact that it can cause them to spread. Once you squeeze your pimple, then pus, bacteria and oils are all released onto your skin. These things can clog your other pores and can cause other pimples to form. In no time, you might find that you have several pimples in the same area as the original pimple that you popped, and your acne could eventually spread and become a lot more problematic. To prevent pimples from spreading, remember these tips:
- Don’t pop your pimples.
- Wash your face regularly with a face wash that is right for your skin type. Your dermatologist might recommend a good acne-fighting facial cleanser that you can use.
- Avoid touching your face too much, which can cause the spreading of oils, dirt and bacteria and can cause pimples to form.
You Could End Up with a Scar
Even though they might be annoying, pimples are not permanent. If you leave your pimples alone, they should go away on their own within a few days. This is obviously not the case with scars, however.
Unfortunately, scars can be caused by popping your pimples. Along with not squeezing your pimples with your fingers, consider these tips for preventing scars on your face:
- Avoid using acne popping tools and pore cleaning tools, which can actually be harsher on your face than using your fingers.
- If you do get a scab on your face, avoid picking at it. Allowing it to heal – no matter how unsightly the scab might be – can help prevent scarring.
It Prevents Natural Healing
Your body is pretty good at healing itself, which is why papercuts and other small wounds generally heal on their own in just a matter of days. When you have a pimple, your body will work on healing from it as well. By squeezing and picking it the pimple, however, you can get in the way of your body’s natural healing processes. Instead, just let your body focus on doing what it does best: taking care of itself.
Of course, if you suffer from acne scarring, there are treatments to help. Consult with one of our board-certified dermatologists for acne scar treatment options.
Of course, having a pimple can be a major pain, and it can be very tempting to want to pop your blemishes. However, for these reasons and more, it’s important not to squeeze your pimples. Instead, consider seeing a good dermatologist so that you can get professional assistance with your pimples and other skin care problems.
