When it comes to using dermal cosmetic fillers as a form of cosmetic skin treatment, there are many options to include Restylane®, Juvederm®, Perlane®, Radiesse®, and others.
There are many cosmetic filler substances available today. Restylane®, Juvederm®, Perlane®, Radiesse®, are just a few of the more popular ones. Many fillers are designed to provide correction in certain areas where others are suitable for all areas presenting a loss in volume. The correct filler for your specific needs will be determined during your consultation.

RESTYLANE®
What is Restylane®?
Restylane® is a hyaluronic acid-based injectable filler used by dermatologists to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct facial wrinkles and folds, particularly nasolabial folds, also known as laugh lines. This injectable product can also be used to add fullness to the lips on people over 21 years of age.
Who is a Candidate for This Treatment?
Most adults wishing to add volume to their skin in order to reduce or eliminate severe folds or wrinkles would be good candidates for Restylane® treatment. However, if you are pregnant or breast feeding, have a bleeding disorder, have had serious allergic reactions to gram-positive bacteria or have any allergic drug reaction that has required hospitalization, you should not use Restylane®.
What is the Treatment Process?
Though individual times may vary, a typical Restylane® treatment takes less than an hour, with little pain reported by patients. The area will be cleansed and injections performed with an ultra-fine needle. The initial treatment will immediately lift your facial folds and wrinkles by adding volume. A follow-up treatment, called the Restylane® regimen, scheduled between four-and-a-half and nine months later, can extend results for up to 18 months.
What Can I Expect After Treatment?
After Restylane® treatment, you may experience mild swelling, pain, redness, bruising or tenderness. Usually these last a maximum of seven days for nasolabial folds and less than 14 to 18 days after lip treatments. There is little usually no downtime associated with the treatments.
What are the Typical Outcomes?
Within a week, most patients see a dramatic improvement in folds and wrinkles, with further enhancement noticeable after the follow-up treatment.

Restylane Silk®
What Is Restylane Silk?
The first and only dermal filler currently approved by the FDA for lip enhancement and treatment of smile area lines wrinkles, Restylane® Silk is perfect for people seeking a natural-looking remedy for aging skin around the mouth. This exciting advancement in the treatment of this delicate area has shown high levels of patient satisfaction. Using particles of hyaluronic acid smaller than those in regular Restylane® filler, this product is able to gently fill in sensitive areas around the mouth.
What causes aging in the smile area?
As they age, many people are plagued by fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth as well as loss of volume and definition in the lips themselves. This is caused by loss of fat and collagen in the face as well as possible bone loss in the area, leading to fine vertical lines and wrinkles with a barcode-like appearance. Rather than plump up the lips themselves, many patients would prefer to smooth out the lines and wrinkles without the artificial look of added volume.
How does Restylane® Silk work?
This filler is designed to smooth out wrinkles and lines, increase definition and enhance shape without over-plumping lips. Clinical studies have shown that the majority of patients undergoing Restylane® Silk treatment saw noticeable improvement in lip fullness and smoothness in the surrounding area within two weeks, with improvement still evident after six months.
Who is a candidate for this treatment?
Although most people can be safely treated with Restylane Silk®, the product should not be used on patients with previous bad allergies, bleeding disorders, allergy to lidocaine or who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
What is the treatment process?
Restylane® Silk should be administered by a physician or qualified health care professional. In a process taking less than one hour, the product is injected into the lip and/or mouth area. Only one or two sessions are normally required.
Are there any side effects?
You may experience some post-treatment pain, swelling, tenderness or bruising. Normally mild in severity, these usually last less than a week.
JUVEDERM®
What Is Juvederm®?
Juvederm® is an injectable filler designed to temporarily fillout facial folds and wrinkles, particularly “laugh lines” (nasolabial folds) that run between the corners of the nose and mouth. The hyaluronic acid in the injected gel helps plump up and smooth out folds and wrinkles.
Who is a Candidate for This Treatment?
Adults wishing to smooth out severe facial folds or wrinkles are normally good candidates for the procedure. However, those have multiple serious allergies or have had allergic reactions to lidocaine or gram-positive bacteria should not have Juvederm® therapy.
What is the Treatment Process?
The injection procedure last approximately one hour. Because the numbing agent lidocaine is a component of Juvederm® injections, there is little discomfort during the procedure, and your physician may also apply a topical numbing cream.
What Can I Expect After Treatment?
After the procedure, you can expect to see maximum improvement within two weeks. Immediately afterwards, you may experience temporary injection site redness, pain, tenderness, swelling bruising, itching, discoloration or bumps.
What are the Typical Outcomes?
Patients generally report a dramatic improvement in nasolabial folds, with temporary enhancement lasting between nine months and one year. Repeat injections are necessary to maintain optimum improvements. During maintenance injections, usually about half the amount of product is used.

PERLANE®
What Is Perlane®?
A member of the Restylane® family of products, Perlane® is also a clear gel compound of hyaluronic acid. Treatment can instantly produce visible results on reduction of moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles.
Who is a Candidate for This Treatment?
For most people looking to reduce the aging appearance of deep wrinkles and nasolabial folds, or laugh lines, Perlane® is a safe and effective product. However, there are some patients who should not have these treatments, including pregnant or breast-feeding women, those with previous drug reactions resulting in hospitalization or those who are allergic to gram-positive bacteria.
What is the Treatment Process?
Perlane® is injected into targeted areas on the face, usually nasolabial folds or crow’s feet. Although most patients experience only mild discomfort, some clinicians will administer a topical numbing cream prior to the procedure. Perlane-L® is a product that is formulated with lidocaine to further reduce discomfort during treatment.
How is Perlane® Different from Restylane®?
Though made from a similar formulation, Perlane® is specially formulated for more pronounced facial folds that benefit from a deeper injection into the skin.
What Can I Expect After Treatment?
After treatment, many patients see immediate visible results. Common side effects are mild in severity and include swelling, pain, bruising, redness and tenderness at injection sites. These normally disappear within less than a week.
What Are the Typical Outcomes?
Results should be noticeable immediately after injections, with any bruising or swelling gone after two weeks, at which time optimum improvement is visible.

RADIESSE®
What Is Radiesse®?
A volumizing injectable dermal filler, Radiesse® is used for adding volume to reduce the appearance of moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles, particularly nasolabial folds, marionette lines (lines running downward from the corners of the mouth), pre-jowl folds, wrinkles at the corners of the mouth and chin wrinkles. The treatment is the only dermal filler currently available that uses calcium-based microspheres to stimulate the natural production of collagen.
Who is a Candidate for This Treatment?
Radiesse® is approved for improving the appearance of most moderate to deep facial folds and wrinkles. As with any injectable substance, Radiesse® is not an appropriate treatment for people with a history of multiple severe allergies, hypersensitivity to any of the treatment’s ingredients or patients with bleeding disorders.
What is the Treatment Process?
Depending on anticipated discomfort, Radiesse® may be delivered in an injection with or without the numbing agent lidocaine. The procedure can take up to 15 minutes depending on extent of the treatment.
What Can I Expect After Treatment?
Patients usually see natural-looking, subtle, long-lasting results immediately, with swelling gone within a week. Minor side effects may include bruising, redness, swelling, itching, pain or tenderness at the site of injections.
What are the typical outcomes?
Most patients report a more youthful appearance with temporary improvement of folds and wrinkles lasting up to a year.
