What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX is a prescription drug (botulinum toxin) injected into the facial muscles to temporarily improve frown lines between the eyebrows and moderate to severe crow’s feet around the eyes. It is an FDA-approved prescription product for this type of treatment.

Used for more than a decade for ophthalmological conditions, BOTOX works under the skin’s surface to target underlying muscular activity, temporarily improving, reducing, or eliminating lines and wrinkles in targeted areas. The dosage for BOTOX is carefully calibrated for cosmetic use and differs from the dosage of other botulinum products, such as Myobloc®, Juvederm®, Dysport®, or Xeomin®.

Who is a candidate for treatment?

Candidates for the treatment are adults who wish to improve their appearance by minimizing the look of frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet. Before treatment, your doctor will discuss your desired outcome and perform a facial analysis.

What is the treatment process?

Your provider will inject BOTOX Cosmetic directly into the muscles in target areas, which takes about 10 minutes. Using a tiny needle, the provider will inject targeted muscle areas.

How well does BOTOX work?

According to the botoxcosmetic.com website, …

BOTOX delivers predictable, subtle results. *In two clinical trials. a majority of patients reported they were “Mostly or Very Satisfied” with their overall treatment results at Day 60. In addition, these patients reported the same responses for the natural-looking result of treatment for their frown and forehead lines. In a 2022 survey, a majority of respondents treated for their crow’s feet lines said they “Completely or Somewhat Agree” that BOTOX® Cosmetic provides natural-looking results.

How long do the effects of BOTOX last?

The effects of BOTOX typically last between three to six months, depending on various factors such as the individual’s metabolism, the area treated, and the dosage used. Over time, muscle activity gradually returns as the body breaks down the botulinum toxin. For some, the intervals between treatments may extend as the muscles become less active with continued use, while others may need more frequent sessions to maintain their desired results. Regular consultations with one of our injectables specialists can help determine the optimal schedule for Botox treatments.

Is BOTOX safe for everyone?

Not everyone should have BOTOX injections, depending on allergies, pre-existing medical conditions, and previous reactions to similar products. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have any muscle or nerve conditions, plan to have facial surgery, are pregnant, nursing, or planning to be. You will also need to give the doctor a list of recent medications.

You should not take BOTOX if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, have had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product, or have an infection at any planned injection site.

Is it painful?

Most patients report little pain during treatment, describing injections as feeling like a small pinch. This discomfort can be alleviated by application of numbing cream before treatment.

What is the recovery time?

There is minimal downtime after BOTOX Cosmetic injections. You can resume your day immediately after receipt of aftercare instructions from your provider.

When will I see the results?

Though results may vary, most patients reported significant improvement in treated areas by day 30. You should start seeing initial treatment results within 24 to 48 hours, with the full effect customarily seen within 30 days. Some patients are concerned that the treatment will make them ‘look fake?’ However, when administered with the proper technique, BOTOX should not cause you to lose the ability to show expression. BOTOX should always be administered by a licensed, trained professional who is an expert in facial anatomy.

Are there side effects?

Common side effects after treatment may include discomfort, swelling, minor bleeding or pain at the injection site, headache, dry mouth, swollen eyelids, neck pain, or tiredness.

Overall, BOTOX is a very safe product, particularly at the very low dosage levels used with BOTOX Cosmetic; however, more severe side effects have been reported in a few cases. Contact your doctor or other medical assistant immediately if you experience problems swallowing, breathing, or speaking after the injections or if you experience weakness, loss of muscle control, double vision, or blurred vision.
