What is Dysport?
A prescription injection, Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA), minimizes the appearance of facial wrinkles and folds, particularly crow’s feet and glabellar lines (frown lines between the eyebrows). Like BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport temporarily immobilizes the facial muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles or those that disappear or lessen when facial movements stop.

How does Dysport® differ from BOTOX®?
Dysport differs from BOTOX mainly because it diffuses farther from the injection site, allowing a broader area of wrinkles to be treated with fewer injections. However, this feature also means the product may spread to muscles that should not be relaxed, such as eyelid muscles, which is one of the reasons you should always be sure to receive treatments from an experienced injection specialist under the direction of an on-site board-certified dermatologist.
Who is a candidate for Dysport?
Candidates for the treatment are adults under 65 who wish to achieve a more youthful appearance by minimizing the severity of crow’s feet or frown lines between the eyebrows. At your initial appointment, your doctor will perform a facial analysis and discuss the areas you hope to improve and what you can expect from treatment. Your health history and medications will also be evaluated.
How long do the effects of Dysport last?
The effects of Dysport generally last around three to four months, although this duration can vary based on individual factors such as the area of injection, the dosage administered, and a person’s unique metabolism. Like BOTOX, Dysport works by temporarily blocking nerve signals to muscles, resulting in reduced movement and fewer wrinkles. Patients may find that with consistent treatments, the body may adapt, leading to longer-lasting effects over time for some individuals. It is essential to have regular follow-up appointments with a qualified professional to assess the results and determine the best treatment plan moving forward.
Is there any reason I should not take Dysport?
People who have previously had an allergic reaction to similar cosmetic injectables such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or Myobloc®, who have a skin infection at the targeted injection site, or who are allergic to cow’s milk protein should not have Dysport® treatment. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use Dysport. Additionally, patients who have a pre-existing disease that affects the muscles and nerves, such as Lou Gehrig’s disease or myasthenia gravis, are considered at higher risk of severe side effects from Dysport® treatment, including breathing and swallowing problems.
What is the treatment process?
Total treatment time ranges from 10 to 20 minutes. Your provider will pinpoint the exact location of injections for optimal results. After treatment, you can discuss a schedule of maintenance appointments to keep frown lines at bay, keeping in mind that Dysport treatments should be spaced at least 90 days apart. Results can last up to 4 months.
Is the treatment painful?
Most patients report the injections to be nearly painless.
What is the recovery rime?
There is basically no downtime with Dysport treatment, and you can return to your regular schedule immediately after the injections are administered.
When will I see the results?
You will see the full effect of the treatment after several days when the muscles have become fully relaxed. Most patients report seeing wrinkle-smoothing results at around three days, though some have results earlier or later. Because Dysport contains less protein than BOTOX, results may be slower as the body breaks the product down more slowly.
Are there side effects?
Most patients have no severe side effects from Dysport treatment. Among those who do, the most common issues are injection site pain or skin reaction, nose and throat irritation, headache, nausea, sinus inflammation, or temporary eyelid swelling or drooping. If you have any of these side effects, you should contact your physician.
